Spam texts have become a significant problem on WhatsApp. Businesses that have access to your contact information can flood your chat feed with promotional messages, often outnumbering the conversations you have with actual people. To address this, WhatsApp is introducing Username PIN authentication for messages from unknown senders.
WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp Beta version 2.24.18.2 for Android provides a closer look at the upcoming Username feature. This new feature will allow users to find and connect with others on the app using unique usernames instead of relying solely on phone numbers, as has been the norm.
This time, what’s intriguing is the introduction of a new security measure called “Username PIN.” This feature allows users to set an additional layer of security. As a result, anyone with a username will need to enter a PIN to contact someone on WhatsApp. This requirement applies only when messaging someone for the first time.
This feature could help curb the influx of spam and promotional texts that often flood your chat window. You’ll also have the option to display only your username or contact number, adding an extra layer of privacy. Usernames have been in development for some time and should be close to completion. If you want to test this feature immediately, you can download the latest WhatsApp Beta update from the Google Play Store.
While the PIN requirement might not completely eliminate the flood of spam messages, I’m hopeful it will at least reduce the frequency and randomness of business texts we receive daily. There’s no confirmed release date for this feature yet, but it’s expected to roll out in the coming months.
