WhatsApp to Soon Allow Username Selection for Accounts!

WhatsApp seems to have big plans for the future. Meta has been diligently working to introduce new features regularly. Recently, the messaging platform was seen testing a built-in sticker tool and is now experimenting with the option to set new usernames. Here are the details.

WhatsApp Username Feature in the Works

According to a WABetaInfo report, Meta-owned WhatsApp is currently testing a feature that allows you to select unique usernames for your accounts. This is part of the latest WhatsApp for Android beta update, version 2.23.11.15.

As shown above, there’s a new option for setting a WhatsApp username under the Profile section. This feature lets you choose a unique name for your account, making it easily recognizable and providing an extra layer of security. You’ll be able to share your WhatsApp credentials without revealing your phone number, and chats initiated through usernames will be protected by end-to-end encryption.

While this is a new concept for WhatsApp, it’s not the first private messaging app to offer usernames. Similar features are already available on platforms like Snapchat, Telegram, and Signal. This addition could significantly impact the way you communicate on WhatsApp once it’s introduced.

This feature is still under development, and it’s unclear how Meta plans to implement usernames on WhatsApp. Questions remain about whether you’ll be able to search for others using usernames or find people who aren’t in your contact list. We expect more details to emerge once the feature is available to beta testers. Stay tuned for more updates and share your thoughts on WhatsApp usernames in the comments below.
