WhatsApp profile photos serve as expressions of identity on the app, aiding in user recognition. However, the risk of misuse prompted WhatsApp to disable photo downloads years ago. Despite this, users could still capture screenshots. Now, with the latest beta release, WhatsApp addresses this issue with a solution to prevent screenshotting.
According to WABetaInfo, the recent WhatsApp beta version #2.24.4.25 for Android introduces significant privacy updates. Users can no longer take screenshots of profile pictures, enhancing security by preventing unauthorized capture of users’ images.
After conducting our tests, we confirm that the feature operates as designed. The provided image shows that users attempting to screenshot profile pictures receive a toast notification indicating, “Can’t take a screenshot due to app restrictions.” This notification discourages users from saving others’ profile pictures moving forward.
This represents a significant advancement in user privacy within the app, addressing the longstanding issue of profile photo sharing and misuse. By closing this loophole, WhatsApp reduces the potential for malicious behaviour such as harassment or identity fraud. Consequently, this feature enhances overall user privacy and diminishes unauthorized sharing of profile photos.
Although it may not offer complete protection, as individuals can still capture profile pictures using another device, blocking the ability to screenshot others’ profiles is crucial in thwarting scammers and malicious actors.
The update is currently available for a limited group of users, accessible through the Google Play Store for those enrolled in the Beta program. Users who aren’t part of the Beta program will need to wait a bit longer, as the update gradually rolls out to everyone in the upcoming weeks.
