In the latest WhatsApp Beta update, it has been reported that the iOS app is introducing support for passkeys. Passkeys were previously implemented on Android devices in October last year, but the feature was missing on iPhones. With the recent update, it appears that passkey integration will soon be available on WhatsApp for iOS.
As per WABetaInfo’s report, the setup screen for passkeys in the iOS app is visible in the latest WhatsApp beta version 24.2.10.73. This suggests that passkey support for the iOS app is likely to be introduced in the near future.
For those unfamiliar, Passkeys utilize biometrics such as Face ID or Touch ID to enable a secure sign-in to your WhatsApp account without the requirement for a six-digit code. This streamlines the login process and reduces the risk of your account being compromised.
The provided screenshot displays the setup screen for the Passkey feature in WhatsApp for iOS. Users will have the option to either set up Passkeys or continue using the traditional passcode method. Passkeys can be deactivated at any time through the settings. In situations where Passkeys are not available, users will need to request a six-digit code for signing into a device.
This approach ensures that users are not compelled to switch to a sign-in method they are not comfortable with. However, it is strongly recommended to adopt Passkeys as they provide enhanced security. Notably, X (formerly Twitter) has also embraced this feature on iOS. Using Passkeys can be particularly beneficial when you encounter difficulties in requesting a login code.
As the feature is still in development, there is no specific release date. Nevertheless, anticipation is high for its eventual launch. Having already transitioned to Passkeys on most Android apps, the prospect of their addition to the iOS version of WhatsApp is exciting.
