WhatsApp Aims to Rival Snapchat with New AR Filters

Last month, WhatsApp rolled out some exciting new features like AR effects, filters, and fun backgrounds for video calls. These are similar to the AR face lenses we’ve seen on Snapchat for years. Initially, these effects were only available on Android, but iPhone users won’t have to wait much longer , WhatsApp is gearing up to bring these updates to iOS soon!

According to WABetainfo, the latest WhatsApp Beta update for iOS (version 24.17.10.74) introduces some exciting new video call features. Now, you can add a bit of fun and personalization to your video chats with custom backgrounds and face effects. Imagine being able to apply real-time filters to your face, adjust the video’s tone, blur your background, or swap it out entirely with preset options.

It also offers a low light mode to help you see better during calls in dim settings. Plus, there’s a Touch-Up mode for those moments when you need to look polished for business calls , think smoother skin and enhanced tones. It’s interesting that WhatsApp is stepping into this territory; it almost feels like they’re trying to compete with Snapchat, which has similar features.

The feature is currently available only to a select group of Beta testers, but it’s expected to roll out to everyone later this year. For those who frequently use WhatsApp for video calls, this update could be a real game changer. That said, while additions like background blur are handy, it makes you wonder , did we really need AR effects or face filters? Are they more fun, or just an extra layer that not everyone was asking for?

What do you feel about these new additions? Will you be testing out these effects and filters when they hit the platform? Let us know in the comments below.
