When we think of WhatsApp, its distinctive green default chat theme is likely the first thing that comes to mind. This iconic color has been a hallmark of the app for over a decade, helping it stand out from the competition. However, since early this year, WhatsApp has been working on a new chat theme feature, and we’re now getting a closer look at how it will function on the Android version of the app.
We’ve previously covered how the chat theming feature will work on iOS. Now, according to WABetaInfo, the latest WhatsApp Beta version 2.24.20.12 for Android provides an even clearer preview of the new Chat theme option.
According to screenshots shared by Android Authority, there will be 12 preset themes available at launch, though this number may increase by the time the feature is released. You can choose any of these themes, and the chat bubble colors will automatically adjust to complement the wallpaper. Additionally, you can select different chat colors and apply your own custom wallpaper.
You’ll also have the option to switch between light and dark themes, with a preview feature that lets you see how the selected theme will appear in dark mode before applying it. Additionally, you can adjust the intensity of the dark mode to suit your preference.
With this feature, you’ll be able to customize the default chat theme on WhatsApp, as well as set individual themes for specific chats. However, keep in mind that the theme you apply will not be visible to the other person in the chat.
While the feature is still in development, it appears to be approaching completion and may be available by the end of the year. This timeline is speculative, though. Currently, it’s only accessible to a limited number of WhatsApp Beta users. If you want to try this feature early, consider signing up for the WhatsApp Beta program on the Play Store.
