Around a year ago, Meta made the decision to remove the ‘view-once’ feature for photos and videos from its WhatsApp apps for macOS and Windows, a move that received criticism from many users. However, it seems that Meta is now reintroducing this feature in the latest WhatsApp for Desktop update.
Initially spotted by WABetaInfo, the ‘view-once’ feature is making a comeback in the WhatsApp Desktop versions, including the official WhatsApp Windows and macOS applications, as well as the latest iterations of WhatsApp Web.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently in the process of ‘rolling out,‘ and it’s expected that all compatible clients will receive this update soon. Additionally, the ability to send ‘view-once’ messages will reportedly be available on WhatsApp for iPad as well.
The ‘view-once’ feature for photos and videos allows users to send media that can only be viewed once by the recipient. Similarly, if you receive a ‘view-once’ message, you won’t be able to access it again after opening it. This feature, initially removed due to ‘privacy concerns,‘ is making a welcome return following numerous complaints about its removal.
The significance of this feature cannot be overstated. There are numerous scenarios where the ability to send or receive ‘view-once’ messages containing photos or videos is invaluable. Previously, if you were using WhatsApp Web or the PC application and received a ‘view-once’ message in a chat, you couldn’t access it and needed to use a phone to view the message. With this latest change, the cross-platform functionality of WhatsApp messaging works seamlessly, allowing users to access ‘view-once’ messages across devices.
What do you think about the reintroduction of ‘view-once’ photos and videos on WhatsApp for Windows (and macOS) applications? Isn’t it a clever feature that bolsters privacy on this messaging platform? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
