This bug demonstrates that the native File Explorer can operate at an exceptionally high speed, but its performance is hindered by recent modifications and resource-intensive frameworks. A Bug Enhances File Explorer Performance
According to the X user, enabling full-screen mode in File Explorer by pressing the “F11” key and then exiting from full-screen mode results in significantly improved performance in File Explorer. It’s worth noting that for those on Insider builds, this action may cause issues with the navigation bar, suggesting a potential connection between the performance degradation and the new XAML-based navigation bar.
However, I tried the same F11 trick on my stable Windows 11 build, and it didn’t cause any issues; instead, it noticeably enhanced File Explorer’s performance. What a fantastic discovery!
According to Albacore (tweet), this trick significantly enhances directory loading, reducing the frequency of encountering the “Working on it…” screen while navigating through directories with high volumes of files. The Twitter user criticized Microsoft for not putting enough effort into cleaning up old code and assets. While the XAML framework may seem like the primary issue on the surface, he suggested that the UDK-based shell, which is good for design but detrimental to performance, could be a contributing factor.
We hope that Microsoft addresses this bug and improves the performance of File Explorer on Windows 11 before the release of the Windows 11 23H2 update, which is expected to launch in September or October. The company will likely announce the release date for the Windows 11 Moment 4 update at its Surface hardware event later in September.
