At MWC 2025, Google unveiled Project Astra within Gemini, announcing its upcoming availability to Android users by the end of March. Now, the feature has officially launched. A Reddit user revealed that Project Astra is already live on their Xiaomi device. For those unfamiliar, Project Astra enables Gemini to view your screen or camera, allowing for real-time interaction via voice chat.
During the demo, Gemini could access the phone’s screen and engage in real-time conversations. To share your camera, users can open Gemini Live and showcase their surroundings for instant interaction. Google confirmed to The Verge that the feature is being rolled out.
Currently, Project Astra is integrated into the Gemini app and is exclusively available to Google One AI Premium subscribers, which costs $19.99 per month. At this time, it is limited to Android phones.
OpenAI has also introduced screen-sharing and live camera features on ChatGPT, available for $20 per month. Meanwhile, Microsoft Copilot offers the same functionality for free in the US, with some users gaining access to Copilot Vision on Android and iOS without needing a subscription.
While Google may be late to the game, the hope is that Project Astra will be worth the wait. The feature can assist users with studying by analyzing on-screen data and information. Additionally, while traveling, users can point their camera around their surroundings, ask questions, and receive immediate responses, making it a convenient tool for real-time interactions.
