Elden Ring has indeed garnered significant attention worldwide, and it’s not surprising to see continued interest from gamers and companies alike. Tencent Games, known for adapting popular titles like PUBG and Call of Duty into successful mobile games, is reportedly interested in creating a mobile version of Elden Ring. If this project comes to fruition, it could follow Tencent’s successful track record of bringing popular games to the mobile platform.
According to sources from Reuters, Tencent Games has been actively engaged in adapting the action RPG Elden Ring developed by FromSoftware. The company obtained the licensing rights for Elden Ring in 2022, which resulted in the formation of a team comprising a few dozen individuals tasked with creating a prototype for the game. Progress on the project has been slow. This development occurred around the same time Tencent purchased a 16% stake in the company in 2022.
According to the report, Tencent intends to make the mobile version of Elden Ring a free-to-play game. While the console and PC versions of Elden Ring are priced at $60, Tencent aims to replicate the success of their previous free-to-play premium titles, which they believe could lead to the profits they seek.
Elden Ring has received widespread critical acclaim for its stunning world design and engaging gameplay, captivating gamers worldwide. However, Tencent has had previous unsuccessful attempts to recreate big-budget video games into free-to-play mobile games. The report mentions a project based on the Nier franchise, which was canceled due to monetary concerns after two years of development.
Considering the nature of Elden Ring, it seems somewhat out of place for it to be a free-to-play title. The game is an open-world action RPG that focuses on player invasion and cooperation, with players creating their character and exploring the island.
