Take-Two Acquires Gearbox and Confirms Development of Next Borderlands Game

Gearbox Entertainment’s acquisition by Take-Two Interactive, welcoming it into the 2K Games family, hardly comes as a surprise. Embracer Group, known for acquiring multiple studios recently, had intentions to sell Gearbox. With 2K Games’ extensive collaboration with Gearbox Entertainment on the Borderlands franchise, Take-Two’s acquisition was practically inevitable.

This morning, Gearbox Entertainment officially announced via an X post and an Embracer Group report that the company is now part of the 2K Games family. Randy Pitchford, the studio’s founder, outlined the key aspects of Gearbox joining 2K Games.

Moreover, Pitchford expressed his enthusiasm for the development. According to the Take-Two Interactive report, the acquisition cost them $460 million. This price tag is significantly lower than the $1.3 billion paid by Embracer Group in 2021. The declaration of this expected acquisition is by 30, 2024.

Following the sale, Take-Two Interactive now possesses the Borderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem franchises, along with any forthcoming titles from Gearbox. With ownership of the Borderlands series, Take-Two has confirmed that the next installment is currently in active development. While no further specifics have been revealed online, enthusiasts of the series have something to anticipate in the months ahead.

The Embracer Group serves as a cautionary example of the risks associated with rapid studio acquisitions. This reinforces the speculation that the company took a gamble with its investments, particularly with the Saudi Arabia venture, as it aggressively acquired studios during the lockdown period.

Nevertheless, when the anticipated deal fell through, the Embracer Group resorted to selling and closing down studios in a state of panic. Therefore, credit is due to Gearbox for successfully securing a more favorable home for themselves.
