In the previous year, Spotify introduced its audiobook collection solely for Premium plan members in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, featuring an extensive selection over 200,000 titles. The reception was overwhelmingly positive. Now, Spotify is elevating the experience further by introducing a specialized plan solely dedicated to audiobooks.
The newly introduced Audiobooks Access Tier provides users with unlimited access to Spotify’s entire audiobook collection, offering Each month 15 hours of listening time at $9.99. Alongside audiobooks, subscribers can also enjoy music and podcasts on the platform, albeit with advertisements, similar to Spotify’s ad-supported free plan.
For those unaware, this new plan is priced just one dollar less than Spotify’s Premium plan, which stands at $10.99. While the Audiobooks Access Tier offers access to the same audiobook privileges, the Premium plan provides additional perks such as ad-free music and podcasts, as well as the ability to download content for offline listening.
The Audiobooks Access Tier doesn’t offer any additional benefits compared to the Premium plan. This raises the question: why would anyone opt for the audiobook plan instead?
I’ve long believed that the 15-hour monthly limit was restrictive. If the plan had offered unlimited audiobook listening or even an additional 10 hours like the $12.99 plan, it would have made the price more justified. However, it seems like Spotify’s move is strategic, aiming to incentivize users to upgrade to the Premium subscription tier.
The primary advantage offered by Spotify in audiobooks is unrestricted access to its entire library, unlike competitors that require separate book purchases. I lean towards the Premium plan over the audiobook-only option unless there’s a significant price reduction.
