Crafting a personalized playlist for a specific occasion or mood can be time-consuming, often taking hours. While you can search for a similar playlist on the app, finding one that perfectly matches your taste is unlikely. However, Spotify is now introducing a feature that allows you to create a personalized playlist using AI.
Spotify has named its latest feature “AI Playlist.” As demonstrated in the announcement trailer, this feature generates playlists based on the prompts you provide. For example, if you input prompts such as “Lo-Fi songs for Yoga sessions” or “EDM music for my game time,” the AI endeavors to comprehend your intentions. By harnessing Spotify’s personalization technology and analyzing the user’s listening history, it crafts the perfect playlist to match your preferences.
To access this feature, navigate to the Your Library section of the Spotify app. Click on the + icon at the top right, and you should see the option for AI Playlist, as shown in the screenshot below.
Here, you’ll be prompted to enter a specific query. If you’re stuck, Spotify offers pre-curated prompts to kickstart the process. Alternatively, you can input additional prompts to fine-tune your playlist, such as “less romantic” or “more country music,” allowing the AI to adjust accordingly. When satisfied, simply tap the Create button to save your customized AI playlist to your Library.
The feature is currently in its initial phase and will exclusively cater to Spotify Premium members on the app. Presently, it’s accessible only in Australia and the United Kingdom, with potential expansion to other regions shortly. This functionality will be available on both the Android and iOS versions of the app.
This isn’t the platform’s first foray into AI features. Just last year, Spotify unveiled an AI DJ. The company is also reportedly developing several other AI-powered features, such as podcast summarization and the ability to deliver midroll ads in the host’s voice if needed. While I’m always a bit skeptical when platforms embrace AI trends, I can see some practical applications for the AI playlist feature.
