For weeks, rumors have been swirling about Sony’s potential acquisition of Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware. While these speculations originated from reliable sources, Sony remained tight-lipped—until today. The company has now officially confirmed its intention to acquire Kadokawa.
As reported in a recent edition of Weekly Bunshun on Yahoo!, Japan, a Sony representative stated,
“We have officially expressed our intention to acquire Kadokawa and would like to emphasize that we will not be providing any additional comments or details regarding this matter at this time.”
In November, Kadokawa announced that they had received a letter of intent from Sony regarding the purchase. Shortly after, Kadokawa confirmed Sony’s intention to acquire them, indicating that the deal is imminent and closer than expected.
With Sony’s confirmation, we can anticipate many new developments. This is the first official statement from Sony regarding the acquisition, although it is not their first connection with this Japanese gaming giant.
Sony holds a 2% stake in Kadokawa and has also invested in FromSoftware, known for the acclaimed RPG “Elden Ring,” a subsidiary of Kadokawa. While many fans have expressed concerns, employees seem optimistic about the acquisition rumors. A mid-level employee remarked, “Why not Sony?‘ We have no objections to being acquired, and it’s even a topic of casual conversation about who would be best to acquire us.”
Although both companies have acknowledged their intentions to pursue the acquisition, speculation remains regarding the specifics. This move is significant for both Sony and Kadokawa, as Sony, a major player in the global video game market, could use this acquisition to enhance Kadokawa’s IPs and potentially integrate them with the Play Station 5 or Play Station 5 Pro.
Do you think this acquisition will lead to a Bloodborne 2 or a PS5 Pro version? What are your thoughts on Sony’s confirmation of its intentions to buy Kadokawa? Share your opinions in the comments.
