I appreciate Snapchat’s efforts in integrating AI-powered features through the Snapchat+ subscription in its app. However, I suggest that they refrain from seeking suggestions from ChatGPT on the implementation of these features. From the underwhelming My AI chatbot last year to the recent lackluster Extend Snap feature we tested, Snapchat appears to struggle in effectively leveraging the capabilities of generative AI. This observation extends to the reported AI Bitmoji pets feature currently in the early access phase for some users.
As indicated by screenshots shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user Jonah Manzano, Snapchat is set to introduce an AI-powered Bitmoji pets feature exclusively for Snapchat+ subscribers, offering them early access to exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features.
According to Snapchat, this new feature enables users to “create Bitmoji pets, described as either realistic or imaginary“, that will accompany their avatars. The process involves utilizing AI technology. Once set up, when friends search for you on the Snap Map, they will see your “AI pet” alongside your Bitmoji.
An update from the X user clarified that the feature allows users to either capture a photo of their real-life pet or select an image from their Gallery. Based on this input, the AI generates an avatar resembling the chosen pet.
The description mentioning the use of AI to create real or imaginary pets implies that Snapchat might offer a selection of pre-generated AI pets. Users can then customize these avatars to their preferences, similar to how they personalize their Bitmoji. The “imaginary” aspect could involve choosing from a range of fantasy or fictional pet options provided by the AI.
The rollout of this feature appears to be limited to a specific group of users at the moment. At the AzMo Tech office, we conducted checks with two distinct Snapchat+ users (one on Android and one on iOS), but unfortunately, access to the feature was not available to us at this time. Nevertheless, it is expected to become accessible to other Snapchat+ users in the near future.
Certainly, the question may arise: “Why is this needed? Who requested such a feature?” Frankly, even I am unsure. Perhaps there are users who desire to showcase their real-life pets alongside them on their Snapchat profile. Other than that particular use case, it seems challenging to identify additional compelling reasons for this feature.
