It’s been a while since Sony released a new PlayStation Portable or PS Vita, leading many to believe that the era of portable PlayStation handhelds is over. However, fresh hope has arisen as reports suggest that a new PlayStation handheld console is in development, potentially powered by a custom AMD processor.
According to YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, who cites insider sources, a new portable PlayStation handheld gaming console is reportedly in the early stages of development. There is no design in mind for it yet. This is distinct from the recently unveiled PlayStation Portal Remote Player, which is a cloud gaming device and does not run games natively.
According to MLID, Sony has given chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) the green light to develop next-generation chips for new PlayStation gaming consoles. This includes the development of chips for the PlayStation 6 as well as the rumored portable PlayStation handheld gaming console.
When considering the internal specifications of the next PS handheld, reports indicate it will likely be powered by a next-generation AMD processor, potentially an APU (Advanced Processing Unit), featuring approximately 18 Compute Units (CUs).
The GPU clock speed is anticipated to run at around 1.8GHz or lower, following the functionality of the PS5’s APU. Sources from MLID, including game developers, have also indicated that the device may support backward compatibility with PS4 digital games.
According to the leak, this rumored PlayStation Handheld gaming console could potentially launch alongside the PS6. As for its official name, it remains uncertain, but terms like Vita 2 and PlayStation Handheld have been circulating as potential monikers for the next-gen gaming device.
There is currently no confirmed release date for this upcoming next-gen handheld. Given that the device is reportedly in early development, it will likely take some time to materialize. It’s important to note that these are early rumors, and plans could change. If a PlayStation 5 Pro is released, it will likely come out before this handheld is even confirmed by Sony. As such, it’s wise to approach these reports with caution.
