Reportedly, Apple Halts Development on iOS 18 – Reasons Unveiled

Apple has reportedly halted the development of iOS 18, the upcoming iteration of iOS slated for release next year. Additionally, work on the next versions of iPadOS, macOS, and other operating systems has also been temporarily suspended. The reasons behind this decision are outlined in a recent report by Bloomberg.

Development on iOS 18 Paused

It has been revealed that the internal communication to halt the development of iOS 18 stems from numerous bugs found in the earlier build. Apple’s decision is driven by the desire to address these flaws before introducing new features for iOS, macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

Apple has successfully completed the initial phase of development for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, which is internally referred to as M1. While iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are codenamed Crystal, the upcoming macOS update is known internally as Glow. The M2 phase of development has been delayed by at least a week, and it remains uncertain when it will resume. The development of watchOS 11, codenamed Moonstone, has also been put on hold.

The report emphasizes that “when assessing the new operating systems slated for release next year, the software engineering management team identified a significant number of “escapes” — an industry term for bugs overlooked during internal testing. Consequently, the division has taken the unusual step of temporarily halting all new feature development for one week to address these bugs.”

This decision follows iOS 17 being marred by various bugs, including the notorious iPhone 15 Pro overheating issue, random shutdown problems, and more. It appears that Apple is now prioritizing the resolution of existing issues in the current iOS 17 version to ensure that iOS 18, slated for next year, is as free of bugs as possible.

Additionally, there are indications that Apple will postpone the release of the iOS 17.4 update until March for similar reasons. It’s worth noting that Apple recently introduced iOS 17.1, featuring AirDrop and Apple Music enhancements, among other things. Furthermore, there is the new iOS 17.1.1 update aimed at addressing several bug fixes.

Updates on this matter are still pending, and how Apple decides to proceed remains to be seen. The hope is that Apple takes measures to avoid potential bugs in its next-generation OS versions, ensuring a seamless experience for users. Further updates on this will be provided as they become available, so stay tuned!
