Remote App Uninstallation Coming Soon to Android Devices

Recently, Google has been fortifying the Android ecosystem, addressing various aspects. Now, it’s introducing another feature that enables users with multiple devices to utilize the Play Store to remotely uninstall apps installed on other devices.

A user and tipster known as Assemble Debug uncovered a feature flag deeply embedded within the Google Play Store. They provided a comprehensive explanation of how this feature operates. However, this functionality is currently inaccessible to the general public and might not be available for a while.

They utilized Play Store version 38.8, and the feature operates precisely as its name implies. Consider having two Android devices, one in your possession and the other at home. With this feature, accessing the Play Store on your current device allows you to choose your other device from a dropdown menu. From there, you can remotely uninstall an app installed on that device.

This addition neatly complements the Google Play Store’s remote app installation capabilities. It’s worth noting that this feature likely necessitates both devices being signed in under the same account and having an active internet connection.

Additionally, the feature will incorporate filters enabling users to organize apps based on their names and sizes. Reportedly, this functionality is anticipated to roll out across all Android platforms, encompassing Wear OS, TV, PC, and Android Auto in the near future.

To remotely uninstall an app on Android, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the Play Store -> Tap on your Profile -> Tap “Manage apps and devices.”
  2. Navigate to the “Manage” section and choose a device from the dropdown menu.
  3. You’ll find a list of apps installed on the selected device.
  4. Select the apps you wish to uninstall. At the top right, tap the bin icon.
  5. Confirm by tapping “Uninstall.”

AzMo Tech’s Take

While the new feature is undoubtedly useful, there’s a wish for Google to introduce biometric authentication for app uninstallation. Presently, the internal workings of this feature remain unclear. However, as described by the tipster, there’s a concern that if someone with malicious intent gains access to one of your devices or inadvertently explores the feature, they might attempt to uninstall apps on the device you’re currently using. This could potentially create a problematic scenario.
