Qualcomm has officially unveiled the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset, featuring Kryo CPU cores. Interestingly, the company has opted not to include its in-house Oryon v2 CPU cores, which are exclusive to the top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite. Instead, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 packs eight Kryo CPU cores and an Adreno 825 GPU with Ray Tracing support.

The chipset is built on TSMC’s 4nm process node (likely N4P), similar to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. In contrast, Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite utilizes TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm (N3E) process node.

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 features a Kryo CPU with the following core configuration:

  • 1x Cortex-X4 prime core clocked at 3.21GHz
  • 3x Cortex-A720 cores at 3.0GHz
  • 2x Cortex-A720 cores at 2.80GHz
  • 2x Cortex-A720 cores at 2.0GHz

Notably, the chipset lacks dedicated efficiency cores, meaning the seven Cortex-A720 cores handle most of the workload. Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 offers 31% faster CPU performance compared to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.

In terms of graphics performance, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is equipped with the Adreno 825 GPU, which is nearly on par with the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s Adreno 830 GPU. It supports:

  • HW-accelerated Ray Tracing with Global Illumination
  • Super Resolution 2.0
  • AFME 2.0 (Adaptive Frame Motion Engine)
  • HDR gaming and more

Thanks to these enhancements, Qualcomm claims a massive 49% increase in GPU performance compared to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. Additionally, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 supports UFS 4.0 storage and LPDDR5X RAM (up to 4800MHz), reinforcing its flagship-tier status.

In terms of connectivity, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 features Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. However, its Snapdragon 5G modem (Release 17) lacks mmWave 5G support, offering only Sub-6 GHz frequency bands.

For camera capabilities, the chipset is equipped with Spectra Triple 18-bit ISPs, supporting image capture up to 320MP and 4K HDR video recording at 60FPS. Finally, Qualcomm claims the AI engine on the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 delivers a 44% boost in AI performance compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.
