The Google Pixel Fold was a commendable first attempt by Google, though it wasn’t among the top foldable devices. Now, nearly 15 months later, Google is introducing its second foldable, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The original Pixel Fold struggled with performance and lacked some of the features that Android has since introduced for foldables. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold aims to address these issues. Here’s all the info you need about it.
Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Design and Display
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has dimensions of 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.11 mm when folded, and 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.5 mm when unfolded. The cover screen features a 6.24-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 1080 x 2424 pixels, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The inner display is a sizable 8-inch LTPO OLED with a resolution of 2075 x 2152 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate.
In terms of design, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold appears taller compared to the original Pixel Fold. Its front screen is narrower and more rectangular, in contrast to the squarer design of its predecessor. Personally, I’m not a fan of the new camera design, which resembles alien eyes, and I believe the Pixel Fold had a more appealing camera module.
At the bottom of the device, you’ll find the USB Type-C port, SIM card slot and speaker grille. When unfolded, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold features considerably slimmer bezels compared to the Pixel Fold. Additionally, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold carries an IPX8 rating for water resistance.
Hardware
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is powered by the Tensor G4, an octa-core SoC featuring a 1+3+4 configuration: 1 Cortex-X4 core at 3.1 GHz, 3 Cortex-A720 cores at 2.4 GHz, and 4 Cortex-A520 cores at 1.95 GHz. The new Tensor G4 delivers roughly 10% improved performance over the Tensor G3.
The Pixel Fold, which used the Tensor G2, sees a significant performance boost with the Tensor G4, showing about a 30% improvement on paper. The device features UFS 4.0 storage and LPDDR5 RAM.
Cameras
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold features a 48 MP wide camera with the IMX787 sensor, which is curious since the Pixel 9 series has transitioned to the IMX858. This half-inch sensor includes optical image stabilization (OIS).
The secondary camera is a 10.5 MP ultrawide lens, while the third camera is a 10.8 MP telephoto lens, also with OIS. Both the inner and cover display selfie cameras feature identical 10 MP Samsung 3K1 sensors, each measuring 1/3.95 inches.
Software
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold ships with Android 14 and, like the Pixel 8 and 9 series, will receive 7 major Android updates and feature drops. It’s disappointing that Android 15 isn’t included at launch, which reduces the device’s update lifespan by one year. However, Android 15, which introduces several new features for foldables, should be available soon check out our Android 15 features article for more details.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold also includes on-device AI capabilities with Gemini Nano, offering features like Image to Text, Pixel Screenshots, and Pixel Studio.
Battery and Connectivity
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is equipped with a 4,560 mAh battery, which is smaller than the 4,821 mAh battery found in the previous model. However, charging speed has been significantly improved, now supporting 45W fast charging compared to last year’s 21W. It also supports 15W wireless charging.
In terms of connectivity, the device includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, an Ultra-wideband chip, and NFC. The USB 3.2 Type-C port also supports video output.
Colors and Pricing
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes in two colors: Porcelain and Obsidian, and offers two storage options: 16 GB + 256 GB and 16 GB + 512 GB.
The base model is priced at $1799, while the 512 GB variant costs $1919. If you’re considering an upgrade from the Pixel Fold, be sure to check out our comparison between the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Pixel Fold.
