Pixel 8a Leak Indicates a Sharp Price Hike and a 256GB Variant

The Pixel “a” series by Google has garnered significant popularity, largely due to its competitive pricing. Historically, models ranging from the Pixel 4a to the 7a have all been priced below $500. However, leaks surrounding the upcoming Pixel 8a indicate a potential shift in this trend.

According to early information obtained by WinFuture from German Pixel retailers, the Pixel 8a is expected to be available in two storage options and four color variants.

However, there’s a significant change in pricing anticipated, with expectations of a sharp increase to 550 euros or more, roughly equivalent to $600 in the US. This marks a notable departure from the consistent pricing strategy seen in previous “a” series models, which have typically remained below $500. The expected specifications for Pixel 8a’s potential $100 price hike could signal a shift away from the affordability that has been a hallmark of the Pixel “a” series. It’s worth noting that the flagship Pixel 8 is currently priced at $699.

The increase in price may be attributed to various factors, including potential changes in specifications or adjustments for taxes like the EU’s VAT. For instance, it’s possible that the Pixel 8a could end up costing around $550 in the US after accounting for these factors. Regardless, it seems inevitable that consumers will face a notable price increase compared to previous iterations.

According to information from one dealer, the 128 GB variant of the Pixel 8a could be priced at €570, while the 256 GB variant could reach €630. The color options expected to be available include Obsidian, Porcelain, Bay, and Mint.

Speculation about the Pixel 8a’s specifications suggests it will adopt the Tensor G3 chipset, mirroring the technology found in the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. Additional anticipated features include dual rear cameras, a compact form factor, and 8 GB of RAM. From leaked renders, the design aesthetics appear strikingly similar to those of the Pixel 8.

Is this Google’s subtle hint that we should brace ourselves for significantly higher Pixel prices in the future? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
