With the release date of Android 15 now confirmed, OEMs are gearing up to unveil their own versions. Oppo appears to be leading the pack, preparing to announce its Android 15-based ColorOS 15 update. This update is anticipated to introduce a range of new features, many of which may also make their way to OnePlus’ OxygenOS. Oppo has officially set October 17 as the date for the ColorOS 15 announcement.

According to posts from the official OPPO and ColorOS teams on Weibo, ColorOS 15 will be showcased during the OPPO Developer Conference 2024. The event’s landing page teases a “revamped ColorOS, offering smoother, smarter, more dynamic, and efficient user experiences.” Additionally, the conference will highlight OPPO’s Game Ecosystem and AI advancements.

Details about the new features in ColorOS 15 are still scarce, but based on leaks from Chinese OxygenOS beta builds, we can expect several enhancements. These include new lock screen customization options, smoother animations, expanded support for more apps in the dynamic island feature, and a redesigned Quick Settings panel.

It’s important to note that ColorOS 15’s official release date has not been confirmed yet. While the Weibo post mentions the update “will be available at ODC,” this likely refers to its announcement rather than the actual release. Initially, the update will be exclusive to China, as OPPO typically takes its time to roll out new versions globally, much like it did with ColorOS 14.

The official release date for ColorOS 15 has yet to be confirmed. Last year, ColorOS 14 launched in China in November, so if ColorOS 15 follows a similar schedule and arrives by the end of 2024, global users can likely expect it around January or February 2025. For context, ColorOS 14 introduced a major UI overhaul and features like File Dock, Smart Sidebar, and an iOS-inspired image cropping tool. However, there were some limitations, such as the dynamic island feature not supporting third-party apps, which we hope will be addressed in ColorOS 15 and OxygenOS 15.

That said, ColorOS 15 is also an exciting release for OnePlus users, as both ColorOS and OxygenOS share the same code base. So, we can expect many of the new features to roll out on both platforms, with only slight variations. Additionally, Android 15 features like App Archiving, partial screen recording, and enhanced security features should make their way to ColorOS 15 as well.

What are your expectations for ColorOS 15? Is there a particular feature you’d like to see in the UI? let us know in the comments!
