It’s been more than a year and a half since OpenAI introduced GPT-4, yet no major frontier model has been released since. While the company did launch upgraded versions like GPT-4o and OpenAI o1 models, users are still eager for GPT-5’s advanced capabilities. Now, The Verge reports that OpenAI may release GPT-5, codenamed ‘Orion,’ by December this year.
The report also mentions that Microsoft is preparing to host the Orion model on Azure by November. OpenAI reportedly plans to release the model to select partners first, introducing new features and products, likely through the API. However, in response to this report, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dismissed the claims on X, stating, “fake news out of control.”
In May 2024, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott presented a graph indicating that upcoming OpenAI GPT models will scale significantly, demanding immense computing resources.
In September, Sam Altman posted a cryptic message on X, stating, “excited for the winter constellations to rise soon; they are so great.” When asked, ChatGPT connects this to Orion, a constellation visible during the winter months of December and January. This has led to speculation that Altman was hinting at the upcoming Orion, also known as the GPT-5 model.
Regardless of the speculation, it appears OpenAI is preparing to launch its next major model soon. Competitors like Anthropic have recently released the Claude 3.5 Sonnet model, which offers improved coding and task performance. With several researchers and executives departing OpenAI, the company faces mounting pressure to maintain its momentum in the AI race.
