After almost two decades of the GeForce GTX graphics card lineup, Nvidia is phasing out the GTX series. Reports from sources in China (via BroadChannels forums), as cited by Videocardz, suggest that Nvidia has a new GPU roadmap that excludes the older GTX 16 series.
The GTX 16 series is said to have been officially discontinued in 2024. The translated statement indicates that “all remaining GPU stock has been allocated to AIC brand manufacturers until their inventories are exhausted.” This implies that new GeForce GTX GPUs will no longer be manufactured.
As a reminder, the GTX 1080 Ti was one of the most powerful and acclaimed graphics cards ever released in the GTX series.
Nvidia unveiled the new RTX 20 Series graphics cards in late 2023, with the RTX 2080 enhancing gaming experiences through features like ray tracing, which significantly improved the graphical quality of contemporary games.
Subsequently, Nvidia introduced DLSS and several other features, including RTX Video HDR, Chat with RTX, and ray reconstruction, all leveraging the architectural innovations of Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics cards.
The GTX Series will undoubtedly be remembered as an iconic lineup of GPUs that has left a lasting mark on the history of Nvidia GeForce. The final addition to this series, the GTX 16 series, was designed for the lower price segment of the market, with performance falling below that of the RTX 2060. Among these releases was the GTX 1660 Super, which offered performance comparable to the GTX 1660 Ti.
Nvidia GeForce GTX to Be Phased Out Soon
Several of the graphics cards I’ve used in various PC builds were from the GeForce GTX lineup, including the GTX 1660 Super, GTX 750 Ti, GTX 650, and the older GT 430. However, GTX graphics cards will gradually be phased out of the market.
This change is beneficial because when purchasing a new laptop or desktop PC, consumers should opt for a new-generation architecture rather than sticking with the outdated GTX series. According to the source, the “remaining inventory” is expected to be depleted in the “next 1-3 months.”
In my opinion, the transition might take longer, given that many budget gaming laptops still rely on the GTX 1650 graphics card. Looking ahead to 2024, I hope to see entry-level Nvidia-based PCs upgraded with RTX GPUs.
With the discontinuation of the GTX series, the new entry-level options will include the recently launched RTX 3050 6GB for desktops and the RTX 2050 based on Ampere architecture for laptops.
