After the success of its budget-friendly earbuds lineup, Nothing’s sub-brand, CMF, has broadened its portfolio with devices such as a smartwatch and GaN charger. A recent report indicates that the brand may be stepping up its game by developing its first-ever CMF smartphone.
This report originates from 91mobiles, which spotted a new device from Nothing with the model number “A015” and the codename “Tetris”. Initially, it was assumed to be the upcoming Nothing Phone (3). However, a few hours after it leaked online, the same model number appeared for BIS certification, this time under the brand name “CMF by Nothing”. This supports the assumption that this is not the highly anticipated Phone (3).
This development leads us to speculate that this could be CMF’s inaugural smartphone. The model number “A015” also deviates from previous Nothing devices like “A063” for the Phone (1) and “A065” for the Phone (2).
The prospect of a smartphone from CMF is not surprising, as the sub-brand aims to establish itself as a budget-friendly alternative to Nothing. While it may share some design DNA with its parent company, it is expected to have its own unique features. Based on the model number, it could be positioned as a budget-friendly phone, priced lower than the Nothing Phone (2a). However, apart from the model number, there is no information available regarding its specifications and price, so it’s advisable to treat this rumor with caution.
While it’s not uncommon for sub-brands to release their own devices, how CMF sets itself apart in a competitive price segment will be fascinating to observe. It remains to be seen if the new device will receive the same level of software updates and features as other Nothing devices. At this point, it’s unclear whether the spotted device is a smartphone or another product.
Do you believe it’s appropriate for CMF to introduce its own devices? In my opinion, it might be a bit premature. Share your thoughts in the comments below.
