Nintendo’s Victory in Switch Emulator Lawsuit Forces Yuzu Shutdown and Pay $2.4M

Last week, news broke of Nintendo filing a lawsuit against Yuzu, which came as a surprise given the company’s tendency to litigate but infrequent targeting of Nintendo Switch emulators. However, just a week later, the lawsuit between Nintendo and Yuzu concluded, ending as expected.

According to the most recent court filings, Tropic Haze, the creators of Yuzu, have reached a settlement with Nintendo. Under the agreement, the developers of Yuzu are obligated to pay Nintendo $2.4 million. Additionally, Yuzu will transfer ownership of its domain to Nintendo and remove all content and materials that violate Nintendo’s intellectual property rights.

Moreover, Tropic Haze has ceased all support for Yuzu and its 3DS emulator, Citra, indefinitely. The official Yuzu X account (formerly Twitter) issued a statement affirming the immediate halt of emulator development. They expressed concerns that their software inadvertently facilitated piracy.

Both parties filed for a final injunction on Monday, but the approval of the settlement now awaits the judge’s prompt review.

For those unfamiliar, Yuzu was a Nintendo Switch emulator capable of running nearly any Nintendo Switch game on a PC, often with various enhancements. Users typically needed legally sourced prod.keys and game ROM files, although many obtained them through illegitimate means.

In the Nintendo lawsuit, the company accused Tropic Haze of circumventing platform security on the Switch hardware to enable emulation, alleging that this promoted piracy. They cited instances such as the Tears of the Kingdom leaks as examples.

We’ll need to wait and see if Yuzu and Citra completely disappear from the internet. This case marks the end of what could have been one of the most impactful lawsuits against an emulator in recent memory. Additionally, with emulators like Ryujinx still active, it’ll be intriguing to observe if they too discontinue their support for Switch emulation.
