With Google I/O 2024 just around the corner, we know that Google will be unveiling a new A-series device, the Pixel 8a. However, a recent FCC listing hints that Google may also introduce a Wear OS-powered smartwatch at the event. But is this really a new Pixel Watch, or something entirely different? Here’s what we know and think.
The FCC listing makes it clear that the Wear OS smartwatch in question is not the Pixel Watch 3, which is expected to launch this fall alongside the Pixel 9 series. The listing, spotted by 9to5Google, reveals the wearable’s model number as G4SKY. The device also appears to support only one Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz), which is common among modern wearables.
The instructions for viewing the on-device FCC label match the process used for the current Pixel Watch. While the Pixel Watch 3 is expected to feature UWB support, this listing does not, further indicating that the device is not the anticipated Pixel Watch 3.
So, what could it be? It might be the never-before-leaked Pixel Watch 2a, although this seems unlikely given Google’s track record of leaks. Instead, this could be a new Fitbit smartwatch featuring a simplified version of Wear OS, as Fitbits are less prominent than Google’s flagship hardware.
The G4SKY model seems to come with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE connectivity. This rules out the possibility of it being the Pixel Tablet 2, which is expected to feature 5G, not just LTE. It’s likely that we’re looking at a smartwatch, but whether it’s Google-branded or Fitbit-branded remains uncertain.
What do you think about the rumors suggesting that the leaked smartwatch might be the Pixel Watch 2a? If it is, what would be a good price for it? Let us know in the comments below.
