After establishing its dominance in the global streaming industry, Netflix made its entry into the gaming realm in 2021. Offering a variety of mobile games within its app at no extra charge, the company aimed to provide more entertainment to its users. Now, Netflix is taking a step further by allowing gamers to enjoy its games on a larger screen – the smart TV.
Introducing the Netflix Game Controller App
Netflix has discreetly introduced the Game Controller app on the App Store, allowing iOS and iPadOS users to enjoy gaming on their smart TVs. This app allows you to experience the entire range of Netflix’s game library on a bigger screen. TechCrunch initially reported this advancement.
Though the app is now available for download, it’s important to note that no games are currently accessible for play on your smart TV through the app. The official app description explains that “the Game Controller app pairs with your TV, allowing you to play Netflix games using your mobile device“.
Upon launching the app, you’ll find a floating white d-pad on the left for cursor control, along with X, Y, B, and A controls on the right, all topped by the recognizable Netflix ‘N’ logo at the center top. However, as of now, there are no games directly available on the app. Instead, you’ll see a message instructing you to choose a game on your TV and follow the provided directions to connect. It’s important to note that Netflix Games on TV are currently in beta, and some devices might not be supported yet.
While the exact timing for game availability on the app remains uncertain, one thing is clear – Netflix is solidifying its presence in the gaming industry. This move signals Netflix’s intent to expand beyond mobile gaming and explore the realm of cloud gaming. The new app adds to the existing collection of 68 Netflix mobile games already available on the App Store.
