Meta is Aiming to Achieve AGI: Mark Zuckerberg

Reportedly, Meta is actively working on the development of a cutting-edge model with the ultimate goal of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In a recent interview with The Verge, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Meta, discussed the company’s vision and its aspirations to attain human-level general intelligence. Notably, Zuckerberg hinted at the possibility of open-sourcing AGI, a bold move considering the trend of companies refraining from sharing research studies in the field of AI.

To stay competitive in the AI race, Meta is implementing transformative changes internally. The Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team has been relocated under the same umbrella responsible for constructing generative AI products for Meta’s diverse range of applications. This strategic move underscores Meta’s commitment to developing impactful AI products and features accessible to billions of its users.

In pursuit of its AI ambitions, Meta is actively acquiring a substantial number of AI compute resources. Mark Zuckerberg revealed that by the conclusion of 2024, Meta is set to possess an impressive count of over 340,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. This formidable number, when augmented with Nvidia A100s and other AI chips, will amass into a colossal resource pool boasting 600,000 GPUs.

Mark Zuckerberg affirms, “We have developed the capacity to do this at a scale that may exceed that of any other individual company,” surpassing even industry giants like Microsoft. Meta is actively pursuing a vision that involves acquiring both hardware resources and top-tier talent to ultimately achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The social media giant is assertively recruiting top AI researchers and engineers for ambitious projects in the realm of artificial intelligence.

Discussing the prospect of open-sourcing AGI, Zuckerberg expresses his perspective: “I tend to believe that one of the significant challenges here will be the concentration of value if something truly valuable is created. On the contrary, making it more open addresses a wide range of issues arising from unequal access to opportunity and value. This aligns with the overarching open-source vision.”

However, he further notes, “As long as it stays sensible and responsible, we are inclined to embrace open source. Of course, you don’t want to be bound to a commitment that might not align with the evolving landscape.” The decision on whether to open-source AGI for Meta will be contingent on Mark Zuckerberg’s guidance and the safe progression of Meta’s AI initiatives.

Furthermore, Zuckerberg disclosed that Meta continues to invest billions in both the metaverse and Reality Labs. The virtual reality (VR) platform is anticipated to feature AI-generated virtual worlds populated by AI characters. Regarding Llama 3, he mentioned it is currently undergoing training and will possess advanced reasoning, planning, and coding capabilities. What are your thoughts on Meta’s shift towards developing the ultimate AI model and the potential open-sourcing of AGI in the future? Let us know in the comment section below.
