The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 is currently underway in Barcelona, Spain, where numerous companies are presenting their cutting-edge technologies. Among them, Lenovo has unveiled its latest innovation: the ThinkBook Transparent laptop. This “proof of concept” device boasts a stunning design that has captivated spectators, myself included, with its remarkable functionality.
Reportedly dubbed “Project Crystal“ by Lenovo, the new ThinkBook transparent display laptop has undoubtedly become the star attraction at the event. This concept showcases the forefront of display technology innovations.
Featuring a 17.3-inch Micro-LED display with a sleek, futuristic, bezel-less design, the ThinkBook transparent laptop offers a clear view of whatever lies behind its screen. With its impressively thin profile, this concept holds promise, particularly for artists aiming to faithfully recreate real-life objects through digital art.
Lenovo has touted the benefits of Micro-LED display technology, highlighting advantages such as high contrast, 1000-nit brightness, and vibrant color saturation. The company claims that the transparent ThinkBook concept laptop can achieve a peak brightness of up to 3000 nits. However, apart from these details, no other specifications have been disclosed at this time.

Lenovo suggests the possibility of incorporating a special layer to render the laptop screen entirely opaque, enabling seamless switching between traditional and transparent laptop modes. Beyond the transparent display, the keyboard and touchpad on Lenovo’s new ThinkBook concept are also housed on a transparent glass slab.
These are entirely touch-enabled, eliminating the need for physical keys. According to reports, Lenovo is investigating the integration of AI to enhance user interaction with its transparent keyboard. Additionally, Lenovo demonstrated compatibility with a Wacom-based stylus for the ThinkBook transparent device. The keyboard can be deactivated, transforming it into a drawing canvas for creative endeavors.
Rather than a front-facing webcam, the laptop’s camera is positioned behind it, away from the user. During MWC 2024, Lenovo demonstrated a scenario where the camera could scan objects and provide AI-generated information about them. This functionality bears resemblance to what Google Lens offers. It’s essential to note that this feature is currently in the conceptual stage.
Despite being a concept, Lenovo’s transparent ThinkBook laptop has garnered significant attention at this year’s MWC. It serves as an intriguing prototype, offering a glimpse into the potential future of laptop design. Media outlets at MWC 2024 who have had hands-on experience with Lenovo’s Project Crystal have expressed great excitement about its possibilities.
