The Apple Notes app is a key tool for iOS users, remaining a popular choice among iPhone and iPad owners despite the variety of note-taking apps available. Over time, Apple has enhanced the app with numerous features, and with the upcoming iOS 18, it looks set to receive even more upgrades. According to AppleInsider, iOS 18 will introduce two notable new features to the Notes app.
One major addition is the ability to record audio directly within the Notes app, similar to the Voice Memos app but fully integrated. This feature will allow users to capture voice memos and seamlessly embed them into their notes.
Currently, users can copy and paste audio recordings from the Voice Memos app into the Notes app. With iOS 18, this process will be streamlined as users will be able to record audio directly within Notes, eliminating the need to switch between apps. This enhancement could greatly benefit users creating digital scrapbooks and professionals who need to record audio notes instead of writing lengthy descriptions for complex entries.
Additionally, iOS 18 is expected to introduce support for mathematical notation in the Notes app. This feature will enable users to work with more complex equations directly within their notes. It appears this new Math Notes feature may integrate with the Calculator app, though the specifics of this integration remain unclear.
The report suggests that the launch of the Math Notes feature in iOS 18 may coincide with the debut of a redesigned macOS Calculator app.
These new features could bring Apple Notes closer to competing with Microsoft OneNote, a highly-regarded note-taking app popular in academia and professional settings. Known for its comprehensive functionality and high rankings in both the iOS and macOS App Stores, OneNote could soon face competition from Apple Notes, which may gain enhanced in-app recording and mathematical annotation capabilities.
Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 at WWDC 2024, running from June 10 to June 14. The public release of iOS 18 is expected in September, alongside the launch of the iPhone 16. With iOS 18 anticipated to be one of the biggest software updates in Apple’s history, we’re looking forward to significant changes and innovations. However, we have about two months before these anticipated features become a reality.
