Microsoft’s KB5036893/KB5036892 Updates Cause VPN Issues on Windows 11 & 10


Microsoft rolled out its second Patch Tuesday update on April 9, 2024, delivering KB5036893 for Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2. Additionally, the monthly security update for April 2024 was provided for Windows Server 20H2 and Windows 10, covering the latest supported versions, 20H2, 21H2, and 22H2 through KB5036892.

The company has officially acknowledged and posted on the Windows health dashboard that the Windows 11 KB5036893 and Windows 10 KB5036892 updates are resulting in failures of VPN (Virtual Private Network) connections. However, it omitted specifying the precise cause of the VPN issues on Windows.

The company noted on its health status page that “Windows devices may experience VPN connection issues following the installation of the April 2024 security update (KB5036893) or the April 2024 non-security preview update”.

Microsoft has provided guidance on the Windows health dashboard regarding how affected Home PC users can utilize the Get Help app in Windows to seek support for their personal or family accounts.

Likewise, impacted Enterprise devices can request assistance for their organization through Support for Business.

The VPN issue affects the following Windows platforms:

Client: Windows 10, version 21H2, Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 11, version 21H2, Windows 11, version 22H2, Windows 11, version 23H2,

Server:  Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016,  Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022 .
