The release of the iPhone 16 series is still about 8 months away, but the rumor mill is already buzzing with speculations. The latest addition to the iPhone 16 rumors revolves around the functionality of the capture button, expected to be featured across all iPhone 16 models. According to the recent reports, the capacitive capture button on the iPhone 16 series is anticipated to enable users to zoom in and out by swiping on it.
A report from The Information suggests that the capture button on the iPhone 16 will be a significant selling point, specifically targeting individual creators who capture and share horizontal videos on popular social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. The report, available behind a paywall, indicates that the capture button will be mechanical, contrary to earlier rumors suggesting it would be solid-state.
Despite being mechanical, the capture button is expected to be touch-sensitive and responsive to user-applied pressure. This feature will enable functionalities such as zooming in and out while capturing a photo or recording a video.
Users can “achieve a focus on images by gently pressing the button and activate the shutter by applying more firm pressure on it.”
Given that the capture button on the iPhone 16 is anticipated to be mechanical rather than solid-state, it will function similarly to the action button and other buttons present on current iPhones. Unlike solid-state buttons that do not physically move when pressed, a mechanical button involves physical movement and provides a tactile response.
The iPhone 16 series is not expected to undergo significant design changes compared to its predecessor, except for featuring a larger display. Consequently, the spotlight is likely to be on the new capture button as a notable highlight of the upcoming iPhone lineup.
