iPhone 16 Rumored to Get Vertical Camera Layout; Improved Titanium Coating for iPhone 16 Pro

Over the past few months, the iPhone 16 series has dominated headlines, offering glimpses into what we can anticipate from the forthcoming iPhones. Ever since leaks first emerged, expectations have swirled around the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus featuring a novel, vertically aligned rear camera bump. These speculations resurface now, providing another peek into the rumored vertical camera setup on the standard iPhone 16 models. Additionally, it’s anticipated that the iPhone 16 Pro models will introduce a refined titanium finish with enhanced scratch resistance.

New Vertical Camera Design Unveiled for iPhone 16

Sonny Dickson, a prominent figure on X (formerly Twitter), recently shared images of the initial iPhone 16 cases, showcasing a new camera cutout tailored for vertically aligned cameras. Reports suggest that Apple has been exploring various prototypes for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus over the last few months, all of which have showcased a vertical camera arrangement.

In February, a leaked image surfaced on X showcasing the vertical camera arrangement, with separate camera rings for the Wide and Ultra Wide lenses within a pill-shaped raised surface. This design isn’t a major departure; reminiscent of earlier iPhones, particularly the iPhone X. It appears that Apple has drawn inspiration from older models to introduce these changes. Notably, the camera flash is positioned outside the bump, while the microphone sits adjacent to the lenses.

The adoption of a vertically aligned camera design is anticipated to bring spatial video recording capability to both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models. Unlike the diagonal camera arrangement seen in the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, which lacks this capability, the new design is poised to offer this feature. Currently, spatial video recording is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the Apple Vision Pro.

Alongside the redesigned rear camera bump, recent iPhone 16 prototypes have showcased an Action Button, currently exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models. Additionally, the entire iPhone 16 lineup is anticipated to introduce a new Capture button, seamlessly integrated into the frame to facilitate easier horizontal video shooting.

New Titanium Finish Revealed for iPhone 16 Pro

As customary, the 2024 iPhone flagships are expected to offer an array of Pro-exclusive features, such as larger displays, enhanced cameras, and more powerful processors. A new rumor emerging from Korea suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro models will employ an upgraded process for finishing and coloring titanium. This advancement in manufacturing is poised to give the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max a sleeker appearance compared to the brushed finish seen on iPhone 15 Pro models.

Consequently, the iPhone 16 Pro models are anticipated to sport a glossy finish, closely resembling the polished stainless steel material used in previous Pro models. This new titanium finish is expected to be more resistant to scratches compared to stainless steel.

The current iPhone 15 Pro models feature a brushed finish that is notably less reflective than previous Pro iPhones. This finish offers increased resistance to fingerprints and reduces the visibility of scratches. Additionally, the Titanium frame not only alters the aesthetic but also contributes to a reduction in device weight. Apple asserts that the combination of the titanium frame and aluminum substructure enhances heat dissipation compared to previous iPhone Pro models with stainless steel frames.

Regarding the color options for the iPhone 16 Pro, leaks suggest that the 2024 models will be available in “Space Black” and “Rose” Titanium variants. The Space Black option will replace the current “Black Titanium” finish found on iPhone 15 Pro models, while “Rose” will introduce a shade of Gold, a notable absence from the iPhone 15 Pro lineup.

Apple is anticipated to launch its iPhone 16 lineup in September 2024. Alongside hardware enhancements and additions, all models in the iPhone 16 series will ship with the iOS 18 software pre-installed.
