As we approach Apple’s WWDC 2024 Keynote in just a fortnight, anticipation mounts for Tim Cook’s unveiling of the company’s AI strategy. Rumors suggest that this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference will be the largest yet, with promises of exciting revelations. Enthusiasts have long awaited this moment, speculating eagerly about what iOS 18 might bring. Mark Gurman’s recent report sheds light on what to expect: iOS 18 and macOS 15 will introduce a host of innovative AI features, including auto-generated emojis and suggested replies for emails and messages.
Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is poised to spotlight Artificial Intelligence as a central theme. Mark Gurman’s recent newsletter delves into Apple’s AI strategy, emphasizing a shift towards tools accessible to everyday consumers. At the heart of this strategy lies Project Greymatter, a suite of AI functionalities slated for integration into core applications such as Safari, Notes, and Photos. Through AI advancements, iOS 18 and macOS 15 are expected to introduce a range of innovative features aimed at enhancing user experiences :
- Voice memo transcription
- AI-powered photo retouching
- Faster and more reliable Spotlight searches
- Enhanced Safari web search
- Automated reply suggestions for emails and text messages
- More natural-sounding interactions with Siri
- Advanced Siri optimized for on-the-go tasks on the Apple Watch
- Custom emoji creation using generative AI
- Smart summaries for missed notifications, messages, news articles, web pages, documents, and notes
- AI-powered developer tools for Xcode
In addition to the AI-inspired features, iOS 18 will introduce a customizable iPhone Home Screen experience. Users will be able to change the color of app icons and arrange them as they wish. For example, you can assign green to all your finance-related app icons and blue to those for social media.. Finally, iPhone users can break free from the standard grid layout that has been in place since 2007 and move icons freely.
It’s important to note that despite the numerous AI-powered features, iOS 18 will not include an official chatbot. Less computing-intensive AI features will be processed entirely on the device, while more demanding features will be handled in the cloud.
Both iOS 18 and macOS 15 will include software to determine whether a task should be processed on the device or moved to the cloud. According to Mark Gurman’s earlier report, the cloud component will be driven by M2 Ultra chips situated in Apple’s data centers.
Apple is reportedly planning to market many of its new AI features as “preview” in the beta versions of iOS 18, indicating that the technology isn’t fully refined yet.
WWDC 2024 is scheduled to start on June 10, and you can view the event on Apple’s website or their official YouTube channel.
