Intel Xeon ‘Clearwater Forest’ with New E-Cores Spotted in Linux Patch

The Intel Xeon CPU lineup, designed for high-end computing, boasts significant multi-core capabilities. Recently, details about the upcoming Clearwater Forest processors have surfaced in a Linux leak. Although the release of this new architecture is anticipated later, the leaked patch provides insights into the E-core specifications.

As per Intel’s roadmap unveiled during Innovation 2023, the company plans to launch Sierra Forest Xeon CPUs this year. Looking ahead, in 2025, we may witness the introduction of the new Intel Xeon Clearwater Forest processors. The Linux patch information, sourced from Phoronix, indicates that these upcoming server CPUs will feature Darkmont E-cores. Further discussion on Intel’s roadmap and the expected timeline for these processors will be explored later.

Efficiency (E) cores were initially introduced with the Intel 12th-generation processors, complementing the hybrid performance architecture that includes Performance (P) Cores. The expectation is that upcoming Panther Lake processors for general consumers will also incorporate the latest Darkmont E-cores. It’s important to note that these advancements are not imminent.

In essence, a Linux patch has been introduced to support the forthcoming Xeon CPUs. The patch includes the model number ‘0xDD,’ indicating the Clearwater Forest Xeon processors set to launch in 2025. Additionally, the patch confirms that Sierra Forest Xeon CPUs, scheduled for release in 2024, will be equipped with Crestmont E-cores.

In early 2023, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger showcased a Xeon chip with the Sierra Forest architecture during a presentation, highlighting the utilization of the Intel 3 manufacturing process. This formidable CPU boasted 288 Crestmont E-cores, promising substantial efficiency improvements compared to the previous-generation Sapphire Rapids Intel Xeon CPUs.

The unveiling of Linux patches from Intel signifies just the initial phase of the company’s commitment to preparing support for the upcoming Intel Xeon CPUs on the Linux platform. For further insights into Intel’s roadmap, as disclosed during the event, additional details can be explored below.

The presentation indicates a subsequent release of Clearwater Forest Xeon CPUs following Sierra Forest. Additionally, as previously mentioned, the anticipated launch of Intel Panther Lake, incorporating the same type of E-core, is slated for 2025. The provided Intel Xeon roadmap originates from a prior investors meeting.
