Google Wallet Appears to be Functional on Android Devices in India

Google Wallet, a remarkable application, previously lacked support in India, consistent with many other Google offerings. Nevertheless, there’s a recent development: the app is now functioning for certain users in the subcontinent, enabling them to configure and include payment cards and passes.

For those unfamiliar, Google Wallet consolidates passes, store rewards, payment, and travel cards into a single platform. It’s essential not to conflate it with Google Pay or “GPay” in India. Google Pay is a distinct application that facilitates payments via UPI (Unified Payments Interface).

While this is not the first time Google Wallet has become operational in India, the app had started functioning a few months ago but ceased shortly thereafter. From a personal perspective, Google Wallet has been operational for me for over three months. During this time, I’ve successfully made payments and added rewards, passes, and tickets to the app without encountering any issues.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to succeed with the WearOS app. It consistently displays the message “Google Wallet isn’t available in your country.” However, I have occasionally managed to get it to function by clearing the app’s data on WearOS. Yet, upon exiting the app, it reverts to displaying the “not supported” screen. Likewise, the Wallet tile in the quick settings on Android continues to indicate “Unavailable.”

While Google Wallet remains unsearchable on the Play Store, you can still obtain its latest APK for installation to see if it functions for your needs.

This recent surge in functionality for more users could be interpreted as a positive sign, potentially suggesting that Google is preparing for an imminent launch of Google Wallet in the subcontinent. Earlier, there were rumors and indications of Wallet’s potential availability in India within code snippets. Therefore, it’s plausible that it’s only a matter of time before Google officially releases the app in India.
