In past Google I/O events, Android played a major role in the announcements, but that changed in I/O 2024 when the platform barely received any attention, disappointing fans who were eager for Android 15 updates. To make up for it, Google has scheduled a special Android-only event before I/O 2025.
The event, titled “The Android Show,” will focus on all the new features and upcoming developments for Android. It’s set to take place on May 13 at 10 AM PT, with Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, hosting the livestream.
While I/O 2025 may still feature some Android announcements, it is expected to primarily focus on Gemini and other AI advancements, such as Project Astra. However, Android fans can rest easy knowing they won’t be left out, thanks to the dedicated “Android Show” event ahead of I/O.
What’s new with Android has always been a huge part of Google I/O, and we know people are excited! That’s why we’re kicking off this year’s I/O season with a special deep-dive, The Android Show: I/O edition. We’ll be sharing news now to get you ready for I/O, where we’ll have even more special announcements and surprises in store.
While Android used to be the main focus at Google I/O, the landscape has shifted rapidly in recent years. At I/O 2024, Android announcements like Scam Detection and Circle to Search were mainly AI-related.
Sameer Samat has hinted at plenty of “surprises” for the upcoming event. While the focus will likely be on Android 16 and its features, we also expect to see Android XR’s integration with smartphones, and perhaps even a sneak peek at the upcoming Pixel 10 series.
