Google Rebrands Bard to Gemini; Introduces Ultra 1.0 Model & Android App

Following earlier speculations, Google has officially renamed Bard to Gemini. This move comes after Bard gained access to the Gemini Pro model in December of last year, sparking discussions about an eventual rebranding. Additionally, Google has introduced its latest and most advanced model, Ultra 1.0, which users can now access through a subscription service akin to ChatGPT Plus, now named Gemini Advanced (previously anticipated to be called Bard Advanced). Let’s delve into all the new features and updates within Gemini.

Google Bard is Now Gemini

Google reassures users that all the tools and features previously available in Bard remain accessible in Gemini. Furthermore, Google has enhanced the user experience by introducing a cleaner interface with fewer distractions, improved legibility, and simplified navigation. According to the company, this rebranding underscores Google’s dedication to providing access to top-tier AI models. Users can still access the platform through the familiar bard.google.com (visit), which now redirects to Google Gemini, or they can directly access the new gemini.google.com (visit) domain.

Additionally, Gemini remains free to use, and Google has expanded access to Canadian users, offering support for both English and French languages within the platform, formerly known as Bard.

Despite the rebranding, Google has yet to incorporate vision multimodal capability into the standard Gemini tier, which may disappoint some users. However, access to the multimodal Gemini Pro model remains available through the Gemini API. Alternatively, users can opt for the new Gemini Advanced subscription, as mentioned earlier.

Explore Gemini Ultra 1.0 on Gemini Advanced

Following its announcement in December 2023, Google has made the Ultra AI model accessible to users through Gemini Advanced. However, to utilize the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model, users must upgrade to the paid Gemini Advanced plan, priced at $19.99 per month (Rs 1950 in India). Notably, Google is offering a two-month free trial period, a generous gesture.

The Gemini Advanced plan includes a new Google One AI Premium subscription and provides 2TB of storage. Interested users can subscribe to Gemini Advanced from this link. Additionally, subscribers will receive instant access to other Google One perks. Furthermore, Google plans to integrate Gemini into Gmail, Docs, and other Google apps in the near future.

Gemini Ultra is expected to excel at highly intricate tasks, including logical reasoning, coding, understanding nuanced instructions, and more. In various AI benchmark assessments, Gemini Ultra has outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, positioning itself as a formidable competitor.

Currently, Gemini Ultra solely supports image analysis through its text-and-vision model. However, Google has announced plans to introduce expanded multimodal capabilities and enhanced coding features to Gemini Advanced in the coming months. Additionally, users will soon have the capability to upload files and documents onto Gemini Advanced and request analysis from Gemini Ultra.

Install Gemini App on Your Android Phone

In addition to the rebranding and launch of Gemini Ultra, Google has introduced the Gemini app for Android smartphones. Currently available for installation in the US, the Android app is expected to roll out globally, excluding the UK, Switzerland, and EEA countries, in the coming days.

At present, the Gemini app supports only the English language, but Japanese and Korean language support is on the horizon. For iPhone users, access to Gemini will be provided through a dedicated tab within the Google app, requiring users to update to the latest version. Additionally, Android users will have the option to set Gemini as their default assistant, replacing Google Assistant. Stay tuned for an upcoming guide on how to do this.
