It has been some time since Google introduced Gemini to Android devices. While its generative AI and integration with Google’s apps are impressive, it has been missing integration with music-streaming apps. However, there is good news: Gemini will soon enable users to select a default music streaming app.
A well-known leaker, Assemble Debug via Piunika Web, discovered this feature hidden within Gemini Settings. This functionality lets users “Choose your default media provider.” As per its description, the Music option in Gemini settings allows you to “Select preferred services used to play music.”
While the “Choose your default media provider” screen may currently appear empty, Google could soon populate it with a list of popular music streaming apps. This addition would enable users to select a streaming app as the default service, allowing Gemini to accept commands related to music streaming, such as “Play my liked songs.”

In contrast, Google Assistant has supported this feature for years, which has been one of the reasons users hesitate to switch to Gemini. Google’s AI chatbot couldn’t execute reminders and Google Maps-related commands until recently.
Additionally, AssembleDebug reports that Google is working on adding a “Real-time responses” toggle. This feature would allow Gemini to send out responses in real-time rather than processing and then sending out the output.
The current Gemini appears to be a considerable distance from Google’s ideal vision. However, the rapid pace at which Google is adding new features, along with the merger of its AI and hardware teams, should facilitate faster feature development and deployment to devices.
What are your thoughts on Gemini? Do you prefer it over Google Assistant, which is still set as your default assistant app? What specific feature would convince you to switch to Gemini instead? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Google is also testing a “Real-time responses” toggle, which will allow Gemini to respond continuously as it processes information rather than waiting to finish generating the entire output.
Not yet for everyone. While Gemini is improving rapidly, it still lacks full feature parity with Google Assistant. However, ongoing updates along with Google’s unified AI and hardware teams suggest that Gemini may soon become a complete replacement.
