Is Gmail Shutting Down? Google Clarifies Rumors

The rumor about Google discontinuing Gmail is rapidly circulating. However, Google swiftly clarified that Gmail will not be shutting down, affirming that there are no intentions to close the widely-used email service.

The erroneous assertion of Gmail’s closure first emerged on X (formerly Twitter) when specific users circulated an image purportedly showing an email from Google. The image falsely claims that “Google is sunsetting Gmail” and suggests that the service will cease operations on August 1, 2024.

Google used X to confirm that “Gmail is here to stay,” reassuring millions of users that the service will not be discontinued. Despite Google’s track record of discontinuing popular services in the past, many users were deceived by the hoax, believing it to be a genuine email.

However, it’s worth noting that Google did introduce a modification to Gmail’s service five months earlier, concerning Gmail’s HTML view, which was deactivated as of January 2024. For years, Gmail had maintained a basic HTML view alongside its modern interface, catering to users with slow internet connections. It was this particular service that was discontinued, rather than Gmail as a whole.

Google also revised its support page, stating that “Gmail is migrating users from Basic HTML view to the latest version of Gmail, also referred to as Standard view.” Henceforth, Gmail will automatically load the standard view for all users. With the rumor now debunked, many users are relieved about Gmail’s uninterrupted service.
