Just before the year’s end, GitHub has opened up Copilot Chat to all users. Previously limited to enterprise users subscribed to Copilot for Business, Copilot Chat was in beta for individual users. Now, it has transitioned out of beta, becoming generally available to everyone on GitHub.
GitHub Copilot Chat Powered by GPT-4
GitHub Copilot Chat, unlike general-purpose language models (LLMs), is purpose-built for AI coding assistance. It harnesses the robust capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model and is tailored specifically for coding tasks across multiple programming languages. Currently integrated into Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio IDEs, if you’re using JetBrains, joining a separate waitlist is necessary for Copilot Chat access.
Excitingly, Copilot Chat is now available at no cost to verified teachers, students, and maintainers of popular open-source projects. To access it within Visual Studio, simply install the “GitHub Copilot Chat” extension from the marketplace, ensuring you’re running Visual Studio 17.6 or a later version.
The pricing structure for Copilot Chat varies based on user categories: For individual users, the cost is $10 monthly or $100 annually. Business users start at $19 per user per month, while Enterprise users are charged $39 per user per month.
The platform offers an array of features including code completion, chat capabilities, the ability to write unit tests, detect security vulnerabilities, and even facilitate code translation across different programming languages.
Numerous AI coding tools occupy this space, including CodeGPT, Amazon’s CodeWhisperer, Google’s Codey, and even ChatGPT. Excitement surrounds AlphaCode 2, leveraging Google’s Gemini AI model, expected to launch in the coming months. It’ll be intriguing to compare GitHub’s Copilot Chat against AlphaCode 2 upon its release.
