Gemini AI Update May Be Coming Soon To Wear OS Smartwatches

Gemini has already replaced Google Assistant as the default voice assistant on Android devices and is now expanding to other non-smartphone Android devices. It looks like Wear OS smartwatches will be the next to benefit from Gemini’s AI capabilities.

Android Police noticed that when you activate Google Assistant on a Pixel Watch or any Wear OS smartwatch, a splash screen briefly shows the Assistant logo. This logo has now been replaced with the Gemini logo, though it still triggers the same old Assistant. Additionally, when you visit the recent page, you’ll see the Gemini icon instead of the Google Assistant icon, with the label “Digital Assistant” next to it.

After the latest version 1.18 update, “Digital Assistant” has become the new label for Google Assistant on Wear OS. It seems to be a placeholder name until Gemini fully integrates. The icon also appears to be temporary, featuring multiple blue sparkles instead of the usual single large one.

We recently saw the Gemini logo on the Pixel Watch for smart replies during a call, which could be another hint that the AI assistant’s full rollout is imminent.

In the Q1 2025 earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai outlined plans to expand Gemini, stating, “Later this year, we’ll upgrade tablets, cars, and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches.” This indicates that Gemini’s full rollout is imminent, and it may arrive after just a couple of updates, so the wait shouldn’t be much longer.
