Anyone who has used Steam since 2006 is likely familiar with Garry’s Mod, and many have probably played it. This immensely popular sandbox game allows players to import characters and models to create maps. Naturally, this freedom has enabled players to develop a wide variety of content, including Nintendo-themed items, for a long time. However, it appears that this freedom has now led to some repercussions for Garry’s Mod.
According to a recent announcement in the game’s news section on Steam, Garry’s Mod will remove all Nintendo-related workshop items from the past twenty years. This decision follows Nintendo’s issuance of takedown notices for content related to the company. Additionally, Nintendo has urged Garry’s Mod players and modders to assist by deleting all Nintendo-related uploads from the Garry’s Mod Workshop.
The developers have stated that they are not surprised by this development. Acknowledging that it is Nintendo’s content, they recognize Nintendo’s right to protect it. Facepunch Studios must comply and remove all related items from the game. I appreciate this straightforward clarification from the developers, and I respect the studio for being clear and direct.
Regarding the unfortunate news, I stand with the developers on this. Nintendo is known for being protective and litigious about its IPs and brands. The last thing the developers want is for Nintendo to take legal action and potentially have the game removed entirely.
Earlier this year, Nintendo challenged the developers of the Yuzu emulator and won the case, demonstrating that the company isn’t hesitant to take legal action. What surprises me is that it took Nintendo so long to notice and act on the Nintendo-related content in Garry’s Mod.
