Galaxy Unpacked 2024: Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+ & S24 Ultra Launched

During the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event, Samsung officially introduced the highly awaited Galaxy S24 series, comprising the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra. This year, Samsung places a significant emphasis on integrating AI features into the S24 lineup under the “Galaxy AI” branding. Beyond design alterations to robust imaging capabilities, substantial tweaks are evident across various aspects of the Galaxy S24 series. Explore the comprehensive details of the Galaxy S24 lineup here.

Galaxy S24 Series: Key Specs

Design

Starting with the design, the S24 series distinguishes itself by featuring a flat display across all devices this year, a departure from Samsung’s previous slightly curved display on the Ultra variant. The S24 and S24+ exhibit a squared-off design with rounded corners and slimmer bezels, reminiscent of the iPhone 15’s housing. Notably, Samsung has adopted a titanium frame for the S24 Ultra, a move echoing Apple’s use of titanium on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In contrast, the more affordable variants, S24 and S24+, maintain an enhanced armor aluminum frame. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 3 provides protection for the front and back of all three models. Maintaining the tradition, the S24 lineup boasts an IP68 rating, ensuring dust and water resistance. Additionally, the S24 Ultra comes equipped with a built-in S Pen.

Display

In the display department, Samsung ensures an immersive screen experience across all three S24 models without compromising on quality. The standard Galaxy S24 boasts a compact Galaxy S24 AI Features AMOLED panel with an impressive 120Hz refresh rate. Notably, it achieves a substantial 2,600 nits of brightness, a significant leap from the S23’s peak brightness of 1,750 nits, making content visibility under direct sunlight a non-issue.

Moving up, the Galaxy S24+ features a larger 6.7-inch Quad-HD+ LTPO AMOLED panel, also reaching a peak brightness of 2,600 nits and supporting a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. As the premium offering, the S24 Ultra comes equipped with a spacious 6.8-inch Quad-HD+ LTPO AMOLED panel, maintaining the same impressive 2,600 nits of peak brightness and supporting a 120Hz screen refresh rate.

Performance

Confirming earlier speculations, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy across all markets and regions. The Galaxy variant of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 sees an enhancement in the Cortex-X4 CPU core, now running at 3.4GHz, and the GPU operates at an increased speed of 1,000 GHz, up from 719MHz on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. This upgrade is anticipated to deliver superior graphics performance for the S24 Ultra, driven by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy.

To address concerns about heating, Samsung has incorporated a larger vapor chamber, offering up to 1.9 times increased cooling performance. The S24 Ultra also introduces Ray Tracing support and faster gaming control. In the United States, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy chipset. Conversely, for the rest of the world, both the Galaxy S24 and S24+ feature Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2400 chipset.

The performance gap between the Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 appears minimal. According to the Geekbench 6 test results, the Exynos 2400 achieved a score of 2,193 in the single-core test and 6,895 in the multi-core test.

In contrast, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy exhibited slightly higher performance, scoring 2,297 in the single-core test and 7,104 in the multi-core test. These results indicate that feature parity is upheld across all variants of the S24 lineup, with both chipsets demonstrating commendable performance in their respective tests.

Camera Upgrades

When it comes to cameras, the Galaxy S24 Ultra maintains a camera setup similar to its predecessor, the S23 Ultra, with a notable upgrade in one aspect. The S24 Ultra boasts an enhanced, high-resolution 200MP primary sensor, accompanied by a 50MP periscope telephoto lens (5x zoom), a 10MP zoom lens (3x zoom), and a 12MP ultrawide lens.

Notably, Samsung made a strategic decision to opt for a 50MP periscope lens capable of optical zoom up to 5x, departing from the 10MP periscope lens that provided optical zoom up to 10x on the S23 Ultra. Samsung justifies this choice by asserting that 5x optical zoom is more suitable for smartphone photography, and to compensate, they’ve incorporated a larger 50MP sensor to capture zoomed images with greater detail and sharpness.

Furthermore, the S24 Ultra boasts an impressive 100x space zoom capability and supports 8K video recording. Enhanced by AI Zoom, it ensures superior zoom quality across all ranges and enhances night-time zoom shots. Completing the camera setup, there’s a 12MP front camera with dual-pixel autofocus.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus feature a standard 50MP image sensor, a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide lens. Selfies are handled by the same 12MP front sensor, offering space zoom up to 30x. While the more affordable variants haven’t seen significant camera upgrades, Samsung leverages AI and other software features to deliver an impressive photography experience.

Galaxy S24 AI Features

As previously mentioned, Samsung places significant emphasis on AI features to position the S24 series as AI-centric smartphones. The introduction of Samsung Gauss, an in-house generative model, adds capabilities such as generating summaries, translating texts and audio, and creating images.

With the integration of Galaxy AI, Samsung introduces Live Translate to the S24 lineup, enabling real-time speech translation during calls to other languages. This functionality extends to messaging on various apps as well.

Additionally, the S24 series introduces the “Circle to Search” feature, allowing users to highlight an image with the S Pen, swiftly retrieving web results and displaying relevant information. Furthermore, the S24 series leverages its generative model for tasks like summarizing documents, improving images through Generative Edit, and assisting in email composition.

Galaxy AI functionalities extend to the Samsung Keyboard and Notes app, offering capabilities such as webpage summarization, sentence rephrasing, and converting handwritten notes into well-formatted text.

Storage, Battery, and Color Options

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is offered with a base storage of 256GB, utilizing UFS 4.0 technology, and extends up to 1TB. The Ultra variants come with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and notably, there is no 8GB RAM variant available this year. It’s important to note that there is no provision for memory card slots to expand storage on any S24 models.

In terms of power, the S24 Ultra is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery. Rapid charging is facilitated with a 45W charger, allowing the device to go from 0% to 65% in just 30 minutes. The S24 Ultra offers a choice of four colors: Titanium Black, Titanium Gray, Titanium Violet, and Titanium Yellow.

Turning attention to the Galaxy S24 Plus, it offers UFS 4.0 storage choices ranging from 256GB to 512GB, complemented by the standard 12GB RAM across all variants. The S24 Plus is equipped with a 4,900 mAh battery, and its charging speed mirrors that of the S24 Ultra. Color choices for the Galaxy S24 Plus include Onyx Black, Marble Grey, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow.

Moving on to the standard Galaxy S24, the base configuration starts with 128GB of onboard storage, employing the UFS 3.1 standard, which might be slightly disappointing. Opting for either the 256GB or 512GB variant unlocks the faster UFS 4.0 storage. All variants feature 8GB RAM as the standard option. The battery capacity is a bit smaller at 4,000 mAh, yet it supports rapid charging from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes with a 25W charger. The color options for the S24 match those of the S24 Plus.
