On Monday, Facebook revealed two fresh features in a blog update. The first, called the Dating Assistant, is designed to suggest potential matches by focusing on users’ interests and preferences. Unlike conventional filters such as height or education, it lets you create a custom prompt to describe the type of partner you’re looking for.
The Meet Cute feature uses a personalized algorithm to connect users in a more story-like, serendipitous way, making the experience feel engaging and less repetitive than traditional swiping.
Facebook’s Dating Assistant allows users to create prompts like “Find me a Brooklyn girl in tech,” and it will suggest suitable matches. Beyond matchmaking, it can also offer dating ideas and tips to improve your Facebook Dating profile. You can access this feature under the Matches tab, and it is gradually rolling out in the US and Canada.
The Meet Cute feature recommends a surprise match every week. Users can choose to start a conversation or skip the match. Facebook describes it as ideal for anyone tired of swiping and looking for an easier way to expand their dating pool. The company is also planning to let users adjust how frequently they receive these surprise matches.
Meta’s new AI dating features definitely push the envelope a bit, bringing algorithm-driven matchmaking closer to what we’ve seen in Black Mirror’s “Hang the DJ.” Unlike the episode’s rigid system, these tools feel more flexible, letting users set preferences, tweak prompts, or adjust match frequency.
From a practical perspective, it could make online dating more efficient and fun—especially for people tired of endless swiping—but it also raises questions about privacy, data usage, and over-reliance on algorithms to make personal decisions.
