Elon Musk Announces xAI to Open-Source Grok This Week

Elon Musk has made an unexpected announcement that his AI startup, xAI, will be open-sourcing Grok, the company’s significant language model, later this week. Grok, which was revealed last November, is currently accessible to Premium+ subscribers for $16 per month on X (formerly Twitter). Grok’s chatbot was introduced as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but its performance has been less than stellar thus far.

Elon Musk has been vocal about his opposition to strict guardrails that restrict AI models from addressing sensitive topics. As a result, Grok is viewed as the realization of Musk’s vision, where the AI chatbot is unafraid to tackle political or sensitive questions head-on.

Nevertheless, Grok has been prone to generating hallucinations on various subjects, and notably, it has leaned towards the left on the political spectrum, contrary to Musk’s stance. With the decision to open-source the platform, xAI is entrusting the open-source community to guide the model’s development and enhance its performance significantly.

Meta has been leading the charge in open-sourcing AI models. Just recently, Meta AI unveiled Llama 2, while Google introduced a compact AI model named Gemma. If xAI opts to share the Grok AI model weights under a reasonably fair open-source license, it could inspire the community to collaborate and enhance the model for various applications.

There’s uncertainty regarding whether xAI will release Grok with minimal restrictions for commercial usage. Although Llama 2 is open-source, it necessitates apps and services to obtain a special license if their user base surpasses 700 million monthly users. Similarly, xAI might consider implementing similar commercial usage restrictions.

Additionally, Elon Musk recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman due to OpenAI’s decision to transition to a closed-source model. Musk later suggested that he would withdraw the lawsuit if OpenAI rebranded itself as “ClosedAI.” Perhaps, in alignment with this sentiment, Musk is choosing to open-source Grok, a move that could solidify his stance on open-sourcing forthcoming AI technologies.
