With the AI hype gaining momentum, another AI app has entered the scene to rival ChatGPT. Anthropic has introduced its Claude iOS app, now available for free download on the Apple App Store. Despite being closed-source, Claude is positioned as a direct competitor to ChatGPT. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, offers a suite of AI Large Language Models (LLMs).
The family includes three models: Claude 3 Sonnet, Claude 3 Haiku and Claude 3 Opus. The Opus model, the flagship of the family, has reportedly surpassed GPT 4 in the rankings according to the LMSYS Chatbot Arena Leaderboard, a crowdsourced open-source platform that evaluates and ranks LLMs. However, GPT 4 Turbo currently holds the top position at the time of this writing.
The Claude iOS app utilizes the Sonnet model for free users, while Pro users have access to the Opus model. The app seamlessly syncs with web chats, allowing users to continue conversations across different devices.
Additionally, the iOS app features vision capabilities. Users can take a photo with their iPhone’s camera or select one from the Photos app and upload it to the Claude iOS app for real-time image analysis and contextual understanding.
Claude iOS App Hands-on
As a regular user of the ChatGPT app on my iPhone, I decided to test out the new Claude app to compare the two. I found that the app is incredibly fast and responds to queries almost instantly. However, when I uploaded a photo of my iPad Mini’s box and asked what it was, the chatbot mistakenly identified it as the logo of Spotify. It’s a bit odd. Additionally, the Claude app allows users to upload documents for contextual information.
For free users, there is a limit on the number of queries you can ask the chatbot in a day, which I believe gives ChatGPT an edge over the Claude iOS app. Furthermore, the Claude app does not currently offer a widget, unlike ChatGPT, which can be accessed via a widget on my iPhone.
Anthropic has also introduced a new Team plan, which is positioned above the existing Pro plan. With the Team plan, users can access all three Claude LLMs based on their specific use case. The Team plan starts at $30 per month per user, and a minimum of 5 seats must be reserved. To sign up for the Claude Team plan, you can visit this link.
