OpenAI has updated ChatGPT’s data controls, allowing you to disable model training while keeping your chat history intact. We were the first to report that it’s possible to opt out of ChatGPT model training while retaining chat history, though this option was previously hidden in OpenAI’s documentation and not widely promoted. Today, OpenAI has officially introduced a straightforward data control setting for adjusting your privacy preferences within ChatGPT.
Now, you can navigate to ChatGPT’s Settings -> Data Controls and turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” This feature is available to both free and paid ChatGPT Plus users. Previously, OpenAI had combined chat history and model training under one toggle, so disabling model training meant losing your chat history, which was counterintuitive.
Chat history is a fundamental feature and should not be linked to model training. By tying these together, OpenAI was effectively penalizing users who opted for privacy, taking away a crucial feature if they chose not to allow their chats to be used for model training.
Many users are unaware that their private conversations contribute to improving and training AI models. Companies like OpenAI and Google use human reviewers to annotate and process these conversations for model training purposes. Consequently, AI companies advise users not to share personal details while interacting with AI chatbots.
Since model training is enabled by default on ChatGPT, I highly recommend disabling it. If you want to have a private conversation with ChatGPT, you can now select “Temporary chat” from the drop-down menu. These chats will not appear in your chat history and will not be stored.
