A year following ASUS’ debut of its initial handheld gaming console and competitor to the Steam Deck, the company is preparing to unveil an enhanced iteration named the ROG Ally X, scheduled for release on June 2nd. Here’s a rundown of the anticipated improvements it may offer over the original Ally.
ASUS Senior Vice President, Shawn Yen, shared some enticing details about the upgraded Ally in an interview with The Verge’s Sean Hollister. One of the most significant enhancements on the horizon is a substantial increase in battery capacity.
Yen emphasized, “We’re not discussing just a 30 to 40 percent increase in capacity.” We’re aiming for a far greater increase than that.” This upgrade is particularly significant in the realm of modern handheld devices, where battery life tends to be a pain point. ASUS has observed how many users resort to attaching large external batteries to address battery issues, which motivated them to incorporate a much larger battery into the upcoming Ally.
Expanding on the details, Shawn also noted that the Ally X will feature over 16GB of RAM and a 2280 M.2 SSD, facilitating convenient upgrades. The design of the Ally X is poised to enhance repairability with interchangeable joystick modules and a sleek new black color scheme. However, the larger battery will contribute to a slightly heavier console, and the upgrades will inevitably incur additional costs.
In contrast to Valve, who enlisted AMD to tweak the Aerith CPU, ASUS will adhere to the Z1 Extreme for the Ally X. Another notable improvement coming to both the existing and upcoming Ally models is the upgraded Armoury Crate SE 1.5 software.
ASUS claims this iteration is more user-friendly, boasting improved layouts for the game library, alongside handy filter and sort tools, and introducing a new light mode option. Numerous other enhancements and features are showcased in the images provided.
The latest sighting of the Ally X was captured in an image shared on X by the official ROG handle. The picture depicted a sleek black Ally X discreetly nestled in the side of a cabinet. It will undoubtedly be intriguing to discover what additional enhancements the new Ally model brings to the table compared to its predecessor.
